Congratulations to MGM faculty Erica Washington on her landmark PNAS paper on the trehalose synthetic enzymes required for fungal pathogenesis and survival under heat stress conditions. MGM faculty John Perfect is a co-author.
Fungal infections are responsible for over a million deaths worldwide each year. Washington, Perfect, and colleagues have identified a potential new front in the battle against fungal infections. By determining two structures of a crucial enzyme involved in fungal survival, they have pinpointed a pathway that could be key to developing new antifungal drugs.
