The work of MGM alum Joel Mainland, who trained with Hiro Matsunami, is featured in the article "Computers Learning to Smell" in The Atlantic (October 13, 2023).
The article describes research published in Science by Mainland and colleagues: "A principal odor map unifies diverse tasks in olfactory perception". Mainland helped conduct the training for the study.
The Atlantic quotes Matsunami, who was not involved with the research, as saying, "People have been trying to predict smell from chemical structure for a long time....This is the best at this point in order to do that task. In that sense, it's a great advance."
