Student Spotlight: Ky Ariano

Graduate student Ky Ariano is from Geneseo, Illinois. He studied microbiology at the University of Wisconsin La Crosse, where he worked with Paul Schweiger, PhD, to characterize outer membrane proteins in the acetic acid bacteria Gluconobacter oxydans, specifically how these proteins shape microbial metabolism and physiology.

Duke MGM was his top graduate program choice because of the multitude of labs conducting research on microbial pathogens. “Learning about Dukes graduate programs allowed me to clarify my need for a supportive yet challenging environment as I develop my skill set as a scientist,” he said.

After earning a PhD, he wants to stay in academia and has hopes to become a faculty member. “I am passionate about science education and overall want to get people excited about the field of microbiology!” he said.

In his free time, Ariano explores various cafes and coffee shops around the triangle. “There are countless options to choose from, and it's always exciting to discover a new favorite spot,” he said.
