Research interests: Anti-tumor immune response triggered by oncolytic virus treatment
I was born in Southern California and spent most of my early life in the Mojave Desert. After I got sick of the desert, I moved to the San Francisco Bay area to earn my BA in Molecular and Cell Biology at University of California, Berkeley. After graduating, I worked four years at the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab for Dr. Robert Glaeser doing single-particle transmission electron microscopy on several proteins from Desulfvibrio vulgaris andSulfolobus solfataricus to solve their structures and helped to improve a novel method of preparing protein samples for Cryo-EM using a 2-D streptavidin crystal lattice as a support and affinity layer for the biotinylated protein.
I’m an avid cyclist and swimmer, and thus far, I am really enjoying Durham. It is a wonderful place to explore and has so many fascinating hidden faces. My proudest moment in swimming is swimming under the Golden Gate bridge from San Francisco, across the mouth of the bay, to Sausalito. It was glorious, and I hope I am able to exceed that joy while I’m here in North Carolina.
I decided to join the Gromeier lab because I find their work on protein translation fascinating. It is one of the least-understood and most complicated processes cells carry out. I am also intrigued by their use of a modified polio virus as a cancer treatment for glioblastoma. I am currently working with the virus in an attempt to further understand how it functions as a cancer treatment and immune stimulator.
