My main research focus has been to understand the physiological roles that lipids play in cellular and organismal physiology. As a graduate student, I worked on Niemann-Pick type C (NPC) disease, an autosomal recessive disorder that causes accumulation of cellular free cholesterol in neurons, which leads to neurodegeneration. Why this disorder causes accumulation of free cholesterol remains unknown. From my graduate school experience, I recognized the importance of lipids in health and disease. As a postdoctoral fellow at Nagoya University, I worked with Lipid Droplets, and showed that aside from serving as a reservoir of lipids, they also function as a platform for degradation of proteins (specially Apolipoprotein B). Recently, lipid droplets have also been recognized to potentiate immune responses to infection. In Dr. Valdivia’s Lab I am currently working on characterizing roles for lipid droplets during host immune response to infection by Chlamydia.
