After a few elemental courses as an undergraduate Biology student I made up my mind about studying molecular genetics, and joined the Fungal Genomics and Molecular Biotechnology research group at the University of Murcia in Spain. During this period I discovered fungal biology along with my new lab partner, Mucor circinelloides. I was fascinated by Mucor RNAi mechanisms and, before I knew it, I started my PhD thesis to study gene regulation by RNAi of major biological processes, such as vegetative development, sexual interaction and pathogenesis in Mucoralean fungi.
