St. Geme and Abraham Elected 2007 Fellows of the American Academy of Microbiology (AAM)

Durham, N.C. (May 2007) – Dr. Joseph St. Geme, III, professor and chair of the Department of Pediatrics and professor in the Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology, and Dr. Soman Abraham, associate professor in the Department of Pathology, have been selected as 2007 Fellows of the American Academy of Microbiology (AAM).

The American Academy of Microbiology is the honorific leadership group within the American Society for Microbiology. Each year, members of the AAM, known as Fellows, are elected through a highly selective, annual, peer-reviewed process, based on their records of scientific achievement and original contributions that have advanced microbiology.

The American Society for Microbiology is the oldest and largest single life science membership organization in the world. Membership has grown from 59 scientists in 1899 to more than 43,000 members today, with more than one third located outside the United States. The members represent 26 disciplines of microbiological specialization plus a division for microbiology educators.

The Society's mission is to advance microbiological sciences through the pursuit of scientific knowledge and dissemination of the results of fundamental and applied research.

St. Geme and Abraham will be recognized during the ASM General Meeting in Toronto, Canada in May 2007.
