May 2004 — Thomas Mitchell, PhD, an associate professor in the Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology and Director of the Molecular Mycology and Pathogenesis Training Program (MMPTP) at the Duke University Medical Center, was selected by the Medical Mycological Society of the Americas to receive the Billy H. Cooper Award for excellence in clinical research, laboratory diagnostic procedures, and teaching. The Billy H. Cooper Award is conferred upon an individual who has contributed substantially to the clinical applications of medical mycology, particularly in laboratory diagnosis and recognition of mycoses.
