I am an undergraduate student at Meredith College and will graduate in the spring of 2010 with a major in Biology and minors in Chemistry and Studio Art. I participated in a summer internship in the Heitman lab under the guidance and mentorship of Yen-Ping Hsueh. While I assisted in many different projects, my main focus was on chromosome modification in gene silencing. I am specifically interested in the function of a histone methyltransferase, which has been shown to be critical for heterochromatin formation and gene silencing in other organisms. Most recently, I am studying the methyltransferase in Cryptococcus by generating deletion mutants.
