Metastatic cancer causes significant morbidity and mortality in cancer patients; understanding the biology of cancer metastasis and identifying novel targets for treatment are critical to improving cancer care. One significant challenge in this effort has been 1) the characterization of cells undergoing epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and 2) the development of novel therapeutic agents targeting the process of metastasis. Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) has been shown to have a paracrine effect on malignant prostate cancer cells, with prostate cancer cells expressing c-met, the receptor for HGF, particularly during castration-resistant progression. Others have shown that c-met is present on colorectal cancer cells with liver metastases, metastatic gastric cancer cells, and pancreatic cancer stem cells; c-met therefore appears to have a role in invasive growth and likely EMT. My research will focus on the role of c-met and other EMT targets in a study of circulating tumor cells in both GU and GI malignancies, as well as in a study of enzalutamide resistance in prostate cancer cells.
